Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?

Shelves in some flat-pack furniture are thin and can bow under books. Shelves in a bespoke unit are sized for the span and the load, with birch plywood where it is needed. Still, a decent off-the-shelf unit can be the sensible choice if you are renting or moving soon. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either do not fit or leave a gap either side. Furniture made for the space fills it.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

How we make alcove units for Vanbrugh Park Estate

We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives smooth doors and panels that take paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted on site, in a colour agreed with you. We make alcove units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about alcoves that are wasted space and cupboards in keeping with an older house.

Solid brick external walls are standard in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and internal walls may be brick or lath and plaster. With so many homes around Vanbrugh Park Estate built before 1919, the wall type is checked before any fixing for alcove units is chosen. Lath and plaster in particular needs fixings chosen for it, particularly behind loaded shelves.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Birch plywood

We often use birch plywood for drawer boxes too, where strength matters. The edge can be painted or shown as a detail.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are the edges we trim on site to follow the wall. It’s how a straight unit meets a wall that is not straight.

Alcove units in Vanbrugh Park Estate: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 46% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Vanbrugh Park Estate, with about 23% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 28 entries within half a mile of the centre of Vanbrugh Park Estate. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Around Vanbrugh Park Estate, about 46% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Greenwich as a whole, about 22%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of alcove units.

Close to East Greenwich Pleasaunce? Alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If your home is one of the older houses near St John the Evangelist's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For families living near Wildwood Montessori School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

What affects the price in Vanbrugh Park Estate

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How big the furniture is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it’s useful to send:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You get in touch and describe the alcoves you want to fill.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves top, middle and bottom, and check the floor for level.
  3. We send the design, materials and finish in a written quote.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving a scribing allowance where they meet the walls.
  5. On fitting day we level the units and scribe the edges so they follow the line of the plaster. Spray-painted units arrive finished; hand-painted ones are painted once fitted.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Getting a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Honest limits

Not everything around alcove units is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Making good damaged walls before fitting
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

FAQs: alcove units in Vanbrugh Park Estate

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Vanbrugh Park Estate?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you work in Vanbrugh Park Estate?

Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, Vanbrugh Park Estate included.

Which finishes are there for alcove units?

There are two options: a spray-painted finish done in our workshop, or a hand-painted finish done on site. Either way, the colour is agreed with you. Spraying gives a smooth, even surface, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

It is built in our workshop, to the sizes taken at the design visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.

Do you work outside London?

No. We only take on work in London, across all the boroughs and the City of London.
