Fitted wardrobes in SE10: how it works
You can choose hinged or sliding doors. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. We weigh them up with you during the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall and a bedroom that never feels tidy.
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
- At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you.
- You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
- The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors.
How our quotes work
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
Why householders in SE10 choose us
- Finished by spray or by hand

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Around Greenwich
Our area takes in the homes around St Mary's Church, Meridian Primary School and Island Gardens, among other places. Nearby too are John Roan School (under half a mile east), St. Paul's (1.1 miles west), Royal School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (less than half a mile north-west) and The Plume of Feathers pub (less than half a mile north). There is a railway station in Greenwich itself: Maze Hill station. Other landmarks nearby include Greenwich District Hospital (0.5 miles north-east) and Greenwich Castle (less than half a mile south-west). Open spaces near Greenwich include Creekside Discovery Centre.
Fitted wardrobes for homes across SE10
Many older bedrooms across SE10 keep a chimney breast with an alcove on each side. In rooms without one, a full wall of storage often works best. Either way, each piece is fitted to the walls and floor as they are.
The biggest shares of homes in SE10 were built since 2000 (about 46%) and before 1919 (about 22%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. More than a third of the homes in SE10 (about 46%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board. Purpose-built flats are home to about 66% of households in SE10, based on Census 2021. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules, so access to homes in SE10 is planned beforehand.
Greenwich: If your children go to Meridian Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If you live in a flat close to Maze Hill station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop, because of the design visit, the quote and the making.
What to check before you book
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- A written quote that sets out the job
- Where they’ll park and unload
- How doors and drawers are fitted
Pricing fitted wardrobes in SE10
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The width and height of the space
- Parking near your home
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.
Before the design visit
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll usually ask about:
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
Honest limits
We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
- Decorating or plastering the room
- Building work to create a loft room
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Questions we’re often asked
What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?
The inside is planned around your clothes. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included. We talk it through at the design visit.
Do photos help?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
How long will the fitting take?
It depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The wardrobes are made at our workshop first.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?
The space in front of the wardrobe usually decides it. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense. We’ll look at the room with you during the design visit.
How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?
We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. In a leasehold flat, it is worth checking the lease first.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
