Fitted wardrobes in Vanbrugh Park Estate
Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about an awkward slope in a loft bedroom and a bedroom that never feels tidy.
Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of homes around Vanbrugh Park Estate are that old. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve
Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. Slopes, chimney breasts, low windows and doors in awkward spots leave standard wardrobes with nowhere to go. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
- Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
- Wardrobes that are full to bursting
- A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
If you live near East Greenwich Pleasaunce, fitted wardrobes are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
Bedrooms in Vanbrugh Park Estate: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Vanbrugh Park Estate were built before 1919 (about 46%) and since 2000 (about 23%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Vanbrugh Park Estate, Historic England’s list includes Royal Observatory (Grade I), about 0.6 miles west, and Royal Observatory Flamsteed House (Grade I), about 0.6 miles west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 20% of households in the area around Vanbrugh Park Estate live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
For a family home near Wildwood Montessori School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If your home is one of the older houses near St John the Evangelist's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

How fitting day works
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
- At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
- We send a quote in writing.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
- Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

What it’s made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for doors, end panels and the faces you see. It suits bedrooms where the wardrobe sits on an external wall.
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribing means trimming edges on site to follow the walls and ceiling. It’s how a straight carcass meets a wall that isn’t straight.
Looking after your furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Work out the split between long and short hanging
- Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
- Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall beforehand
- Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls
With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then to keep them running smoothly. Do not let shoes or bags sit in the track.
Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe aren’t blocked. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes.

Questions we are often asked
Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Vanbrugh Park Estate?
Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London, and Vanbrugh Park Estate is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
My home in Vanbrugh Park Estate is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Fitted wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?
That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We’ll look at the room with you at the measuring visit.
Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns tricky space into storage.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it’s useful to be around at the end.
Flats, conversions and lettings
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.
