Fitted Cupboards in Chingford

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted cupboards in Chingford starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Tall cupboards where space is short
  • Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly
  • Making use of an awkward alcove or corner

Fitted cupboards for homes in Chingford

Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves set at the heights you choose. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. People typically come to us about boxing in a boiler with room for servicing and cupboards that suit a period house; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a family house, the hall and stairs normally carry the most clutter. Around Chingford, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You let us know where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

How to get a quote

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

What it costs

There is no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The width and height of the space

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Helping us understand the room

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

To make a start, get in touch through our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

What fitted cupboards cannot fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Wiring for lights or sockets
  • Work on a boiler, which is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register
  • Moving gas or electricity meters

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Common questions about fitted cupboards

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Chingford station?

Yes, homes across Waltham Forest and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Chingford?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

It depends on the job. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you will know before we start.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease.

Why bespoke in Chingford?

Off-the-shelf cupboards are quicker to get and typically cost less, and they suit some rooms well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely sit flush. A fitted cupboard costs more but follows the room. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
