Need fitted cupboards in Picketts Lock?

Questions we’re often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Picketts Lock affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you cover homes near Ponders End station?

Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them, use our contact form.

Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?

Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. It’s one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.

Fitted cupboards in Picketts Lock

A boiler cupboard needs more thought than most. The boiler maker’s instructions set out the clearances and ventilation it needs, and we design the cupboard to keep to them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, while any work on the boiler is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Typical reasons to get in touch are somewhere for coats, shoes and bags and storage for towels and bedding, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In an older home, panelled doors and painted mouldings may suit; in a newer one, plain flat doors may fit better. Whatever your home in Picketts Lock is like, the door style is part of the design conversation. You choose the colour, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Is bespoke worth it?

There is a place for both. In a simple space, off-the-shelf can be enough. Where the room is tricky, the walls are uneven or you want the cupboard to look built in, fitted joinery is normally the better answer. Ready-made pieces come with a fixed inside layout, rather than where you need them. With fitted furniture, the inside is planned around what you keep.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Fitted cupboards in Picketts Lock: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Picketts Lock were built before 1919 (about 27%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Picketts Lock is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Purpose-built flats are home to about 40% of households in the streets around Picketts Lock, according to Census 2021. For a flat, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

The wider area includes historic houses like Bruce Castle, about 2.6 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves. When you need someone else

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Moving or servicing a boiler
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Changes to meters, which are for your supplier or an electrician

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Ventilated doors
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which matters for long shelves and drawer boxes. You can leave the layered edge on show or paint it.

Shelves

Some shelves can be set to move as your storage changes.

What happens on fitting day

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything tricky like a boiler or meter.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Preparing the room

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
