Fitted cupboards for homes in Walthamstow
Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, like by the front door or in a hallway corner. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away, while keeping them easy to reach. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. We make fitted cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are storage for coats and shoes in the hallway and a cupboard for a recess or odd corner.
With a large share of homes around Walthamstow built before 1919, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Questions we’re often asked
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Walthamstow?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Walthamstow?
Yes, we work across Waltham Forest, Walthamstow included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Normally not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?
Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, and the doors open fully for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.
Is bespoke worth it?
Standard cupboards come in set widths and heights, so there is normally a gap at the side or a space above. Ours are built to the full width and height you choose, so less space goes to waste. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

Fitted cupboards in Walthamstow: local notes
About 56% of the homes in the area around Walthamstow went up before 1919, and about 23% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Walthamstow is within about a quarter of a mile of the Lloyd Park Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 56% of homes in the area around Walthamstow were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Older homes tend to have tricky recesses and uneven walls, which is where fitted cupboards help, with each one scribed to the wall.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Bruce Castle, about 2.4 miles west. If your own home is a period one, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. For families living near Greenleaf Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as ABC Cinema, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.
How fitting day works
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You get in touch and tell us whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.

- The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.

- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
