Your questions about fitted home offices in Rayners Lane

I live near Northolt Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Rayners Lane?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Fitted home offices in Rayners Lane: what you get

A fitted home office gives your work a proper place in the house. Our home offices are made for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and loft rooms, planned around how you work. In Rayners Lane, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. Typical reasons to get in touch are no proper place to work from home and a spare room that has to be an office and a guest room, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

The bay window in a 1930s front room or bedroom gives good daylight for a desk, with shelving or cupboards along the walls beside it. Around Rayners Lane, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing. The desk can be shaped to the bay or set across it.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room and the home it is in.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, and go through the design.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The sections are brought in, joined and scribed to the walls, ready for work.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Arranging a design visit

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, use our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

What it is made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF suits panels and angled pieces. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. It makes up most of the visible parts.

Birch plywood

Shelves full of books and files carry real weight. Birch plywood suits them, as it’s strong and stiff. Long spans need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.

Tips worth knowing

People planning fitted home offices often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:

  • Choose a calm colour for a working room
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Think about glare on your screen
  • Estimate the shelf space you’ll need

We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. The cable routes are pointed out so you know where everything goes. You’ll be ready to set up your desk.

Keep heavy loads on the shelves meant for them. Shelves are made for the load you planned. Spread heavy books and files evenly.

Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf desks leave you to work out the cables. With a bespoke desk, cable routes are part of the design. It keeps things neat above and below the desk. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Why us?

  • Over 300 projects completed
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls

Take a look at our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf or what a quote should include.

Is it time for fitted home offices?

An alcove, a landing or a space under the eaves can often take a desk. Standard desks seldom fit an alcove or a slope. A desk made for the space puts it to good use.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • Glare from a window on the screen
  • A laptop that moves from room to room
  • Wires with no tidy route
  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go

If your home is one of the older houses near St. Andrew’s Church, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Will the quote be in writing?
