Fitted home offices in Greenhill, Harrow

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make fitted home offices for homes in Greenhill, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A guest room that is needed for work
  • Flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight
  • Wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day

How we make fitted home offices for Greenhill

A spare room often makes the best home office, particularly if it still needs to work as a guest room. We can design desks, shelving and cupboards that leave room for a bed, or doors that close over the desk at the end of the day. We’ll look at how the room is used when we visit in Greenhill. If your home has paperwork and files with nowhere to go and a guest room that’s needed for work, home offices made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Stud walls in newer homes can take shelves above a desk, as long as the fixings suit them. With many homes around Greenhill built since 2000, that’s something we check at the design visit. Heavier storage stands on the floor.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf desks and shelving are made for flat walls and standard sizes. In an tricky space, standard pieces leave gaps. Bespoke furniture is made to the room and fits it. It costs more than flat-pack furniture, and what you get is an office that fits. Big standalone units can dominate a compact room, whereas fitted pieces painted to suit the walls sit back into the space.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Greenhill

Does a conservation area in or near Greenhill affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is Greenhill in the area you cover for fitted home offices?

Yes, Greenhill is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Harrow and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Can you add power points to the desk?

That is work for your electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Why people ask for fitted home offices in Greenhill

Trailing cables are one of the things people most want to sort. Planned routes through the desk keep cables out of sight. New sockets are for your electrician, and the furniture is planned to suit.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Wires with no tidy route
  • A room with two jobs to do
  • An alcove or landing that could take a desk
  • A laptop that moves from room to room

If you live in a period home close to Church of St John the Baptist, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Working from home in Greenhill

About 45% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Greenhill went up since 2000, and about 22% before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. Part of Greenhill is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Greenhill, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

For families living near Saint Jerome Church of England Bilingual School, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side. The wider area includes historic houses like Headstone Manor, about 1.1 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Greenhill is about 1 mile south-west of Harrow, part of the London Borough of Harrow. Wherever you are in Greenhill, the process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, furniture made in our workshop and fitting in your home. Greenhill is one of 20 places on our list for Harrow.

We make fitted home offices across HA1, HA3 and HA2. You’ll find streets here like Lyon Road, Hill Road and Byron Road, and we cover homes on all of them for fitted home offices. If you’re just outside Greenhill, we also cover Wealdstone (1 mile north), Northwick Park (1 mile south-east), Harrow (1 mile south-west), Kenton (1 mile east) and Roxeth (1 mile south-west). Elsewhere in Harrow, we also cover Stanmore (2 miles north-east), Hatch End (2 miles north-west), Little Stanmore (3 miles north-east), South Harrow (2 miles south-west), Pinner Green (3 miles west) and Pinner (2 miles west).

Caring for painted furniture

Getting the most from fitted home offices starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Measure your chair and how much room you need behind it
  • Note the position of sockets in the room
  • List the equipment you use, from screens to printers
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit

Before we leave, we check every drawer, door and shelf with you. We will show you the cable routes and how they’re meant to be used. You will be ready to set up your desk.

Don’t overload shelves beyond what they were designed for. Shelves are made for the load you planned. Spread heavy books and files evenly.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Door frames and corners get covers too. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space you want to work in.
  2. We visit to measure the space, including any slope, alcove or uneven wall.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the office in your home, trimming the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. Your spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the office.

Preparing the room

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Starting with a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, use our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
