About our alcove units in Rayners Lane

We fit alcove units across Harrow and the rest of London. It starts with a design visit, where we measure the alcoves and go through the design. After that we send a written quote; the units are then made at our workshop and fitted in your home. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about toys and paperwork with no proper home and bowed walls and sloping floors.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, which matters around Rayners Lane, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, alcove units can run the full length of one wall, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Alcove units arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. You contact us with some details about the chimney breast and alcoves.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves top, middle and bottom, and check the floor for level.
  3. We send the design, materials and finish in a written quote.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving a scribing allowance where they meet the walls.
  5. At fitting, we set each unit level on a plinth or feet and trim that edge to follow the wall. Spray-painted units arrive finished; hand-painted ones are painted once fitted.

Getting ready for fitting day

FAQs: alcove units in Rayners Lane

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Rayners Lane?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Northolt Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not usually. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How long does it take to fit alcove units?

The time on site depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The units are built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting, scribing and finishing.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Make a rough list of what the cupboards need to hold
  • Bring the sizes of anything that has to fit in the cupboards
  • Mention parking and access when we visit
  • Think about how the units meet the picture rail and cornice

Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, go gently with the new paintwork, lifting things rather than sliding them and avoiding any scrubbing.

Put coasters or mats under anything that holds water to stop rings and water marks on the paint. Wipe up spills right away.

Pricing alcove units in Rayners Lane

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, use our contact form.

What to send when you get in touch

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

What it’s made from

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home once the units are in. Small marks are easy to touch up.

Spray-painted finish

Because the units are sprayed before they come to you, there is less painting to do in your home. Give the paint time to cure fully once fitted.

Rayners Lane homes and alcove units

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Rayners Lane were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 71%) and since 2000 (about 16%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Rayners Lane is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Harrow are set locally. Depending on your street in Rayners Lane, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Tell us what the parking is like at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Headstone Manor, about 1.7 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. For an older house near St. Andrew’s Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Close to Eastcote House Gardens? Alcove units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

What alcove units cannot fix

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Removing or altering a chimney breast, which is structural work
  • Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Decorating the rest of the room
