Fitted wardrobes across HA4: what to expect

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. Space that’s hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. Most enquiries start with no space in front for doors to swing and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

How our quotes work

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Bedroom storage across HA4

Homes across HA4, Ruislip, Ruislip Manor and Eastcote among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. Fitted wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them.

About 57% of the homes in HA4 went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 22% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. About 57% of homes in the HA4 postcode district date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 59% of households in HA4 live in detached or semi-detached houses, the 2021 Census shows. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

HA4 is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. If you are unsure about access or parking, mention it when you contact us.

Ruislip: If your home is one of the older houses near St Lawrence, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. For families living near Warrender Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

What it’s made from

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth lifts the wardrobe and hides an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.

Spray-painted finish

Because the doors are sprayed before fitting, they arrive already finished. Treat them gently while the paint cures fully.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the design visit.

Do you need fitted wardrobes?

Moving home often prompts it. Wardrobes from an old home rarely suit a new room, or may not make it up the stairs. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.

People normally get in touch with us about things like these:

  • A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy

What it costs

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Getting in touch

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Questions we’re often asked

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

Uneven floors are normal in older homes. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth and the doors line up.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
