Questions we’re often asked

Is Barwell in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes, we work across Kingston upon Thames, Barwell included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.

Do you cover homes near Chessington South station?

Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?

We can plan for either a wall-mounted TV or one standing on the unit. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables, and if it stands on the unit we size the top for it.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It’s made in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.

TV and media units for homes in Barwell

Speakers need space to be heard properly. A soundbar typically sits just below the TV, while larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors, so we plan open spaces for them. People typically come to us about speakers muffled behind doors and a TV that looks out of place in the room, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Barwell, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. That leaves room for TV and media units in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Fitting day, step by step

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the unit, materials and finish.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

How to get a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

How it’s made

Birch plywood

We often use birch plywood for carcasses and drawers that stand up to daily use. The edge can be painted or left as a detail.

Shelves

Open shelves suit speakers and things you want on show, while cupboards hide the rest.

Looking after your furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
  • Talk to your electrician early about sockets

After setting up, check that the boxes aren’t getting too warm. Do not block the gaps and openings left for air with cables or clutter.

Tag each lead at both ends to make future changes easier.

What affects the cost of TV and media units

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How big the furniture is
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Before the design visit

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • How you want to use the space

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Living-room storage in Barwell

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 45% of the housing in the streets around Barwell, with about 23% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Barwell, Historic England’s list includes The Tower at Ruxley Towers (Grade II), less than half a mile west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. All of London, Kingston upon Thames included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Barwell. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

Close to Claygate Common? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Mary the Virgin, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Fitznells Manor, about 2.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Barwell is part of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, about 4 miles north of Kingston upon Thames. Whether your home in Barwell is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. We cover places right across Kingston upon Thames, large and small.
