Fitted wardrobes across KT10: what to expect
Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it, keeping rails at a height they can reach. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall and clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms.
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too. Let us know about parking as well, as a van usually needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
- You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
- In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
What goes into your quote
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Homes across KT10 and their bedrooms
In KT10, a spare room often doubles as a study or a guest room. Fitted wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them.
The biggest shares of homes in KT10 were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 38%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 38%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. More than a third of the homes in the KT10 postcode district (about 38%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. About 38% of homes in the KT10 postcode district were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Post-war bedrooms are normally simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, fixed to suit the wall.
KT10 is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. If you are unsure about access or parking, mention it when you contact us.
Hook: Living in a block of flats near Chessington North station? Then fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. The wider area includes historic houses such as Fitznells Manor, about 2.6 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.
Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
Wardrobe shelves can carry more weight than you’d think. Birch plywood helps keep them straight.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface on large doors. It works on plain and panelled doors alike.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, so there’s usually a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so the space is used and there is nowhere for dust to collect on top.
What to check before you book
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- A written quote that sets out the job
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
What it costs
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- How many doors and drawers there are
- The overall size of the piece
- Spray painting or hand painting
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.
What we need to know
These details help when you contact us:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Your postcode and the borough
- Examples of the look you are after
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in KT10
Where is the furniture made?
Everything is built in our workshop for your room, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
What materials do you use?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.
Will you paint the walls around the furniture?
No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that is often wasted. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.
Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?
Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, in moisture-resistant MDF. If there’s damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.
