About our TV and media units in Norbiton
In many period living rooms, the chimney breast and its two alcoves shape the whole wall. The alcoves can take cupboards for equipment and shelves above. Any chimney vent is kept clear. Most enquiries start with somewhere to keep games tidy and a TV that looks out of place in the room, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Every room has its fixed points: the window, the door, the radiator and the sockets. In any home in Norbiton, those set the layout for TV and media units before anything else. After that, the mix of cupboards, shelves and open space follows how you live.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Questions we’re often asked
Does a conservation area in or near Norbiton affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Norbiton?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, message us from the contact page.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.
Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?
Electrical work is not something we do. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.
What it costs
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- The internal fittings
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The overall size of the piece
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What to send when you contact us
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Your postcode and the borough
You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

How fitting day works
You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so let us know what applies at the measuring visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.
- You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind.
- We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
- We send a quote in writing for the unit.
- We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop, with openings for cables and air.
- The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls.
How to prepare
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
Starting with a design visit
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

What we do not do
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:
- New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
- Painting the walls and ceiling
- Configuring the TV and sound system
Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What goes into it
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Cable routes
- Hand-painted finish
- Ventilated cabinets
Caring for painted furniture
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:
- Talk to your electrician early about sockets
- Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf
- Note the screen size you have or plan to buy
- Think about the viewing height from your sofa
Clean the paintwork with a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners.
Label cables when you set things up to make future changes easier.
Boards, parts and paint
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting often suits units in older houses. The colour is agreed with you.
Shelves
Shelves are sized for the equipment and speakers they carry, with space around for air.

We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.
The wider area includes historic houses like Pembroke Lodge, about 2.2 miles north. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. If you live in a flat close to Norbiton station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Close to Canbury Gardens? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.
