TV and media units for your home in Kingston upon Thames

How we make TV and media units for Kingston upon Thames

In many period living rooms, the chimney breast and its two alcoves shape the whole wall. The alcoves can take cupboards for equipment and shelves above, with the TV in one alcove or on the chimney breast. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. We make TV and media units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are set-top boxes stacked on a stand and games, controllers and remotes everywhere.

Homes in an area like Kingston upon Thames can come from many different periods, and a wall might be brick, lath and plaster, blockwork or plasterboard. We check what the walls are made of at the measuring visit, then choose the fixings. With a chimney breast, TV and media units typically fill the alcoves; without one, they can run along a whole wall.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Living-room storage in Kingston upon Thames

In the streets around Kingston upon Thames, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Kingston upon Thames, Historic England’s list includes Church of All Saints (Grade I), under half a mile south-west, and Cleave's Almshouses (Grade II*), under half a mile south. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

Hampton Court Palace, about 1.8 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Luke, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. For a family home near St Luke's CofE Primary School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

What it’s made from

Spray-painted finish

The unit arrives already finished. Give the paint time to cure fully.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Wide panels around a screen need to stay flat. MDF gives smooth, even surfaces for painting with crisp edges.

How we price TV and media units

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How big the furniture is
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What to send when you get in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Examples of the look you are after

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Why bespoke in Kingston upon Thames?

Screen sizes change, and a stand chosen for today’s set may not suit the next. We can leave room for a larger screen, so the unit lasts longer. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a recess, a slope or an odd corner, and most homes have one somewhere. Built-in pieces are made to fit them.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It is useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

What you get with us

  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Built around your room
  • Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight
  • A spray or hand-painted finish

Tips worth knowing

Getting the most from TV and media units starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
  • Let us know about access early
  • Decide where you’ll sit, so the screen height suits it
  • List every box, console and speaker that needs a home

Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, place equipment gently rather than sliding it to avoid marks.

Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves, with the weight spread across shelves.

Common questions about TV and media units

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Kingston station?

Yes. We cover the whole of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

I live in a flat in Kingston upon Thames. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The fitting depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The unit is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

How do I get started?

It is easiest to tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including anything on the walls near the work. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. A quote in writing follows for the unit.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Preparing the room

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
