Why bespoke in Colliers Wood?

Off-the-shelf TV units come in a few set colours. We paint ours in the colour you choose, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so off-the-shelf pieces either do not fit or leave a gap either side. Furniture made for the space fills it.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

What you get with us

  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • Work across the whole of London

TV and media units in Colliers Wood

Media equipment warms up as it runs, so equipment can’t simply be shut in a closed cupboard. We plan ventilation into the unit, using open backs, gaps or openings where equipment sits. It’s worth checking each maker’s guidance on clearances. If your home has nowhere good for speakers and equipment with nowhere proper to go, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large share of the homes around Colliers Wood were built before 1919, which in London mostly means Victorian and Edwardian houses. Main rooms in houses like these typically have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, which gives TV and media units an obvious place to go. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Practical tips

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
  • Find out how much space each box needs around it
  • Let us know about parking and access at the design visit
  • Think about which things need to be seen by a remote

Cupboard doors may settle slightly with use. Hinges can typically be adjusted to line them up again.

Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves, with the weight spread across shelves.

Could you do it yourself?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

The problems TV and media units solve

Upgrading to a bigger screen is a common trigger. The old stand no longer suits it, or the screen takes over the room. A unit around it puts it in proportion.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Clutter around the TV
  • Speakers muffled behind doors
  • Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard
  • A screen at the wrong height

Southside House, about 2.8 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

What to check before you book

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

From workshop to your room

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so TV and media units are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

Before we arrive

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Common questions about TV and media units

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Colliers Wood?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Colliers Wood?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you add sockets behind the TV?

That’s a job for your electrician. Ideally it’s done before fitting, and we plan cut-outs and cable routes around the sockets.

Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?

If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position and the cable route behind it. The bracket needs a sound wall.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route along with the room itself. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
