Tooting Bec TV and Media Units

TV and media units in Tooting Bec: built-in TV walls and media cabinets. We make each piece in our workshop and fit it in your home, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

  • A TV stand that does not fit the wall
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • Clutter around the TV

Ask about TV and media units in Tooting Bec

Is it time for TV and media units?

Upgrading to a bigger screen is a common trigger. The old stand looks too small, or the screen dominates the wall. A unit around it puts it in proportion.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Clutter around the TV
  • A cabinet that traps heat
  • Wasted space around the screen
  • A screen at the wrong height

For families living near St Boniface RC Primary School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

How we make TV and media units for Tooting Bec

The screen size comes first. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy, with a margin so it isn’t a tight squeeze. Viewing height matters too: we set it to suit the sofa, not the shape of the wall. If your home has boxes and consoles on the floor and space for a soundbar and speakers, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Around Tooting Bec, a large share of homes date from before 1919, which in London mostly means Victorian and Edwardian houses. Main rooms in houses like these usually have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, which gives TV and media units an obvious place to go. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases.

Your questions about TV and media units in Tooting Bec

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Tooting Bec?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Tooting Bec?

Yes, we work across Wandsworth, Tooting Bec included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is there room for a soundbar?

Speakers work best in open spaces rather than behind doors. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen with open bays for bigger speakers. Tell us the speaker sizes when we visit.

Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?

Electrical work is not something we do. Your electrician handles sockets and wiring, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease, so it is worth checking before fitting day.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

Where other trades come in

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
  • Structural changes to the wall

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can use our contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Cable routes
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Ventilated cabinets

Fitting day, step by step

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it helps to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. A written quote follows for the unit.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Starting with a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Living-room carpentry in Tooting Bec: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 64% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Tooting Bec, with about 11% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Tooting Bec include Gala Bingo Club (Grade I), under half a mile south, and Franciscan Primary School (Grade II), under half a mile east. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 64% of homes in the streets around Tooting Bec were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. In houses of that age, the chimney breast often becomes the TV wall, with cupboards in the alcoves for set-top boxes and speakers.

The wider area includes historic houses like Southside House, about 3 miles west. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. For an older house near St Augustine, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.
