Colliers Wood Built-in Bookshelves
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Colliers Wood starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
- Shelving behind a desk for books and files
- Shelves that suit a period room

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Colliers Wood
The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are shelves that suit a period room and shelves deep enough for large books.
Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and they set the lines that built-in bookshelves have to meet. Homes built before 1919 make up a large share of the housing around Colliers Wood, so those details are worth looking at closely during the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Bought bookcases come in the maker’s colours. We paint ours in the colour you choose, spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, so they can match the walls or stand out. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Fitting day, step by step
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.
- You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind, and whether you want cupboards below.
- We visit to measure the wall and go through the design. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
- Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
- We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
- We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.
Before we arrive
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Colliers Wood
I live near Tooting station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.
I live in a flat in Colliers Wood. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Built-in bookshelves are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
How do you decide on shelf depth?
The depth is set around your books. Another option is deeper storage below and shallower shelves above.
How do you stop shelves from sagging?
We plan each shelf for its span, depth and load. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support, and birch plywood helps keep them flat. Mention anything very heavy when we plan.
Can shelves go around a radiator?
It can be done, but it needs careful planning. The heat has to rise and move into the room, so we plan an opening or gap and never box it in. Often the better answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or have your plumber move it.
The problems built-in bookshelves solve
Families often need shelves for children’s books and games. Low cupboards and open shelves can grow with them.
Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:
- Space for art books and records
- A room lined with books
- Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
- Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
For a family home near Sellincourt Primary School, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
Built-in living-room furniture in Colliers Wood
Homes built before 1919 make up about 55% of the housing in the area around Colliers Wood, with about 16% built between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Colliers Wood, Historic England’s list includes Gala Bingo Club (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north, and Waterfall House (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Colliers Wood. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.
Close to Figge's Marsh? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If you live in a period home close to St Nicholas, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Could you do it yourself?
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
