Fitted wardrobes in Colliers Wood: what you get
Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We plan for the people using it too, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. People normally come to us about standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall and musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of the homes around Colliers Wood date from then. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Bedroom storage in Colliers Wood
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Colliers Wood were built before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 16%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Colliers Wood is within about a quarter of a mile of the Mellison Road Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Merton included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Colliers Wood. We go through parking and access at the design visit.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Nicholas, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If you live near Figge's Marsh, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. If you live in a flat close to Tooting station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

What else we make in Colliers Wood
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
What happens on fitting day
In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.
- To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
- The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
- Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
- We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
How to prepare
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
Arranging a design visit
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Advice
How it’s made
Birch plywood
Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood helps keep them straight, even across a wide section.
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting is done in the workshop, giving a smooth, even surface on large doors. It suits a crisp, modern look as well as a classic panelled door.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. We set fitted wardrobes level and scribe them to the walls and ceiling. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit.

Questions from Colliers Wood
How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Colliers Wood?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Colliers Wood?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
How long does it take to fit wardrobes?
The time on site depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included. We plan it with you when we visit.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
How we price fitted wardrobes
Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Parking near your home
- How big the furniture is
- How many doors and drawers there are
There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.
What we need to know
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- What the furniture needs to hold
To make a start, get in touch through our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.
