TV and media units in Merton Abbey
About our TV and media units in Merton Abbey
Speakers need space to be heard properly. A soundbar normally sits just below the TV, while larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors. If you are living with clutter around the TV and alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
London homes run from Victorian terraces and interwar semis to mansion blocks and recent flats, and your home in Merton Abbey could be any one of them. Because walls and floors change with the age of a house, the design of TV and media units starts at the design visit. Bowed walls call for scribing, and plasterboard for the right fixings.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Questions we are often asked
Is Merton Abbey in the area you cover for TV and media units?
Yes, we work across Merton, Merton Abbey included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Merton Abbey?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
What happens when you come to measure?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.
Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?
If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position, with a route for the cables. The bracket needs a sound wall so we check the wall at the measuring visit.
What affects the price of TV and media units?
Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.
Is there room for a soundbar?
Speakers and soundbars get open shelves sized for them. Closed doors muffle sound.
Is bespoke worth it?
Bought units come in the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking at the design visit.

Before and after fitting day
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
- Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
- Decide where you will sit, so the screen height suits it
- Note the size of each box and speaker
After setting up, check that the boxes aren’t getting too warm. Keep vents, gaps and open backs clear of cables and clutter.
Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves, with the weight spread across shelves.

From workshop to your room
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including pictures on nearby walls. We cover floors and doorways first. Sections are then carried in and assembled.
- You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
- We visit to plan the unit and check the way in.
- A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
- We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit.
Preparing the room
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Advice
Merton Abbey homes and TV and media units
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Merton Abbey were built before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Merton Abbey, Historic England’s list includes Colour House at Misters Liberty's Print Works (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and Wheel House at Misters Liberty's Printworks (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 31% of households in the neighbourhood around Merton Abbey live in terraced houses, according to Census 2021. Terraced houses in London often have alcoves beside a chimney breast, and TV and media units are made to those widths.
If your children go to Haslemere Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live in a period home close to Christ Church Colliers Wood, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

What we don’t do
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
- Connecting and setting up your equipment
- Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. How it works.
What it is made from
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Spray-painted finish
- Ventilated cabinets
- Cable routes
Why people ask for TV and media units in Merton Abbey
In older living rooms, a TV can look out of place. A built-in unit around the chimney breast lets it sit more quietly.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Boxes and consoles on the floor
- A TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall
- Space for a soundbar and speakers
- Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
Close to Wandle Park? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.
Choosing a carpenter
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Will the quote be in writing?
