How fitting day works

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally straightforward, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. TV and media units arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Advice

TV and media units in Eastfields: what you get

Everything starts with the screen. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy, with a margin so it is not a tight squeeze. The height of the screen matters as well: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. If your home has empty alcoves beside the TV and leads that show from every angle, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Eastfields, so that layout is worth knowing well. TV and media units normally go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear, though every room is measured first.

We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Talk to your electrician early about sockets
  • Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
  • Find out how much space each box needs around it
  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished

Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. For the first while, place equipment gently rather than sliding it.

Don’t stack boxes on top of each other in one space. Each one needs space around it.

Living-room carpentry in Eastfields: local notes

In the streets around Eastfields, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and before 1919 (about 16%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Eastfields, Historic England’s list includes Eagle House (Grade I), less than half a mile west, and Prospect House (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Merton is no exception. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the measuring visit.

If you live in a period home close to St. Mark's Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. If you live near Figge's Marsh, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Why people ask for TV and media units in Eastfields

Most people come to us because of the cables. Leads trail from the TV to the boxes, the sockets and the speakers, and no stand ever quite hides them. Built-in units give cables somewhere to go.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Nowhere good for speakers
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • Clutter around the TV
  • Bought furniture that does not suit the room

If you live in a flat close to Mitcham Eastfields station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

Where other trades come in

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • Repairing plaster or redecorating
  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

FAQs: TV and media units in Eastfields

I live near Mitcham Eastfields station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Merton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Eastfields?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers. Each box should have its own space and you can check the maker’s guidance on clearances.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.
