Under-stairs storage in Clay Hill, Enfield

Under-stairs storage in Clay Hill: pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs. Each piece is designed at a visit to your home, made in our workshop and fitted by us.

  • Storage that doesn’t match the hallway
  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
  • A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter

Under-stairs storage designed for your room

Is it time for under-stairs storage?

With more people working from home, some want a desk tucked under the stairs. If the space opens onto a room, a compact desk with shelves above can sit beneath the stairs. It’s a modest workspace, well suited to a laptop and the household paperwork.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show
  • A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs
  • The low end of the space going to waste

Forty Hall, about 0.7 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

About our under-stairs storage in Clay Hill

Not every staircase is in a house. Maisonettes, split-level flats and homes with stairs down to a lower floor often have usable space beneath the steps. The parts we make in our workshop are sized to get through the doors and hallways on the way in. Wherever your home is in Clay Hill, the process is the same. Most enquiries start with coats and shoes piling up in the hall and a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many post-war homes have a boiler in a hall, kitchen or landing cupboard. Any new cupboard around it keeps the clearances its manufacturer sets out. Because many homes around Clay Hill date from the post-war years, we look for boilers, meters and fuse boards at the design visit. Any boiler work is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

What happens on fitting day

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a post-war house, the hall and stairs are normally straight and simple, so carrying in is rarely difficult. Even so, the route is measured during the design visit. On the day, sections are joined, levelled and fixed.

  1. You tell us about the space under the stairs.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan how you’ll use the space.
  3. We send a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the drawers and cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and run through each drawer and door with you.
  6. New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Ask for a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Storage in Clay Hill homes: local notes

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 36% of the housing in the streets around Clay Hill, with about 34% built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Clay Hill is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Around a third of the homes in the streets around Clay Hill (about 36%) were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Post-war homes often have fewer nooks than older houses, so under-stairs cupboards add storage that was never built in, with fixings chosen for the wall.

Near listed buildings like South Lodge, less than half a mile east of the centre of Clay Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For families living near St John's CofE Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Clay Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The size of the space, the number of drawers and doors, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, message us from the contact page and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Could the space under my stairs take a desk?

In many homes it is possible, if the space is open to a room and tall enough at one end. A built-in desk with shelves above and drawers below can work well. New sockets or lights are for your electrician, and we leave a route for the cables.

Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?

Yes. We plan the storage so the meter or fuse board stays easy to reach, often with a door of its own. Access matters for readings and safety checks, so we design around it.

Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?

Often a mix works best. Drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space, and a cupboard at the tall end handles taller things. We’ll suggest a layout when we visit.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Flat-pack furniture is designed to be easy to carry home and quick to assemble. Ours is designed for one staircase and made at our workshop to suit it, with birch plywood drawer boxes that hold screws well and carry weight. Which suits you depends on how much you want from the space. Several standalone pieces of different sizes can make a plain room look busy, whereas a single fitted run gives one clean line. It can be painted to suit the room.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.
