Loft storage in Clay Hill: what you get

We make each eaves cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and carcasses, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s carried up and fitted in your home in Clay Hill. We make eaves cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs and unused space in a dormer.

Post-war housing makes up a good share of the homes around Clay Hill, and in London that can mean houses or flats in blocks. In a house of that age, the stairs often have a cupboard below that can be reworked, while flats tend to have hallways and recesses worth using. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Pricing loft storage in Clay Hill

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The internal fittings
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Before the design visit

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

What happens on fitting day

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Drilling into concrete is noisier than into brick or plaster, so a word with the neighbours before fitting day can help. Fitting day is planned around any building rules on noisy work. We tidy as we go.

  1. First you tell us about the loft room and what you’d like to store there, and how you get up to it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the knee walls, slopes and stairs and plan the storage with you, including the headroom under the slope.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the storage we’ve discussed.
  4. The cupboards and drawers are made in our workshop, in sections sized for the loft stairs.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and leave it ready to use, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Arranging a design visit

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make loft storage for a home in Clay Hill?

Yes, we work across Enfield, Clay Hill included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Clay Hill?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Can you convert my loft as well?

No, the conversion itself is not our work. We design and fit storage once the room is in place, from eaves cupboards to wardrobes under the slopes.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are
  • Think about how you’ll reach into the eaves
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves

When you load the drawers and cupboards, put heavy things low. That keeps the drawers running smoothly. Shelves are made for what you told us you’d store.

Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly. It helps to clear out now and then. Keep the heaviest things near the floor.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made furniture has to come up the loft stairs in one piece or flat-packed. We make each piece in sections that fit up the stairs. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room. In a plain post-war room, standalone pieces stand proud of the wall with nothing to frame them, while a fitted run can create its own recesses.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Is it time for loft storage?

A sloping ceiling makes a standard wardrobe impossible. A wardrobe made for the slope uses the full height. It is a common need in a loft bedroom.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • Furniture that can’t get up to the loft
  • Unused space in a dormer
  • A loft room with too many jobs

Close to Enfield Town Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
