Under-stairs storage for your home in Enfield

Under-stairs storage for homes in Enfield

Each under-stairs cupboard is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it is strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and fronts. The finish is sprayed or hand-painted, and then the storage is fitted in your home in Enfield. Typical reasons to get in touch are cleaning things with no proper home and a staircase with untidy space beneath it, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

An interwar house normally has a proper landing, sometimes with a recess or an airing cupboard, and that space can take shallow fitted storage. Around Enfield, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, it’s worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. You get in touch and tell us a little about the space under your stairs, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
  2. We come to measure, note any meters or fuse boards and discuss the design.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the storage we’ve discussed.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, shaped to the angle of your stairs. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted in your home and checked, drawer by drawer. Any meters stay easy to reach.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Drawers under the stairs often carry heavy things, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Birch plywood suits them, as it is strong and holds screws well. Long shelves benefit from it too.

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall. They’re one reason fitted storage looks built in. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Note the size of anything tall you want to store
  • Empty the cupboard so we can measure every corner
  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
  • Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes

Before we leave, we check every drawer and door with you. If there’s a meter or fuse board, we make sure its door opens fully and the meter is easy to see. You will know everything works as planned.

Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. Let them dry before they go away, and air the cupboard if it feels damp.

Fitted storage in Enfield

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Enfield were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 31%) and before 1919 (about 24%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 53 entries within half a mile of the centre of Enfield. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and under-stairs cupboards can be designed to work around them. About 31% of homes in the streets around Enfield date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Interwar houses normally have a straight flight of stairs with a cupboard below, often holding the meters or the fuse board, so the design keeps them reachable.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Andrew Enfield Parish Church, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Living in a block of flats near Enfield Town station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
