Under-Stairs Storage in Forty Hill

Under-stairs storage for your home in Forty Hill: pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs. Each piece is designed at a visit to your home, made in our workshop and fitted by us.

  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work

What prompts under-stairs storage in Forty Hill

In a smaller home, every bit of space counts. A well-designed under-stairs cupboard can take the coats, shoes, cleaning things and bags that would otherwise crowd the hall. It often eases the load on every other cupboard too.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • An old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall
  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
  • A low corner too deep to reach into
  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter

For a family home near Worcesters Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

What to check before you book

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Under-stairs storage for homes in Forty Hill

When the hall is tight, the space under the stairs is often the only place left for coats, shoes and bags. A hanging section, shoe drawers and a shelf for keys keep everything off the floor. With a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, it sits quietly in the hall. It’s a small change that makes a busy hallway feel ordered. Typical reasons to get in touch are a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go and a dark, wasted space under the stairs, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Around Forty Hill, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, and every piece is still scribed where it meets the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need.
  2. At the design visit, the space is measured and any meters are noted, because they must stay accessible.
  3. We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a written quote, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop and painted in your colour.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.

How to prepare

Advice

Forty Hill homes and under-stairs storage

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 43% of the housing in the streets around Forty Hill, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Forty Hill include Forty Hall (Grade I), less than half a mile north, and Worcester Lodge (Grade II), less than half a mile north. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Enfield sets its own rules. Where a street in Forty Hill is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

If your home is one of the older houses near Jesus Church, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. If you live near Enfield Town Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Forty Hill?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Forty Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

What materials do you use for under-stairs storage?

Our storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Birch plywood holds screws well, which matters for drawers that carry weight. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Practical tips

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Let us know about anything bulky that needs to fit
  • Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
  • Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
  • Let us know about parking near your home

Before we leave, we check every drawer and door with you. Any door to a meter or fuse board is checked so it opens fully and leaves the meter in view. You will know everything works as planned.

Damp coats and shoes put moisture into a closed space. It’s best to let them dry before closing the door on them, and air the cupboard if it feels damp.

Could you do it yourself?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
