Under-stairs storage in Hadley: what you get

Where the space under the stairs opens onto a room, a compact desk can fit beneath it. A built-in desk with shelving and drawers can turn the space into a quiet corner for paperwork. Any new socket or light there is for your electrician, and we leave room and a route for the cable. We will look at whether it suits your stairs when we visit in Hadley. If your home has no room for a small desk or a place to work and an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter, that’s what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Hadley, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Under-stairs storage in Hadley: local notes

About 42% of the homes in the streets around Hadley went up before 1919, and about 25% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Hadley is within about a quarter of a mile of the Monken Hadley Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. The share of homes built before 1919 around Hadley, about 42%, is well above the figure for Barnet as a whole, about 20%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of under-stairs cupboards.

For families living near Susi Earnshaw Theatre School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. Wyllyotts Manor, about 2.8 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

Could you do it yourself?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

What it costs

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How square the room is
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Parking near your home

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote.

Before the design visit

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it helps to send:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Hadley

Do you cover homes near New Barnet station?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Hadley?

Yes, Hadley is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barnet and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?

Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Either finish can follow a colour already in the hall.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

What is under-stairs storage made from?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors and fronts are MDF, which is stable and paints well, and birch plywood is strong, so it suits drawer boxes and carcasses. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

What under-stairs storage can’t fix

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we will tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. It is useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
  2. We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

How it’s made

Pull-out drawers

The back of an under-stairs space is hard to reach, so drawers that slide out are often the answer. Everything is in view when the drawer is open. They can hold shoes, the vacuum or cleaning things.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. We use it for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.
