How we make fitted wardrobes for EN5
What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It is worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about storage boxes stacked under the bed and dusty space on top of the wardrobe.
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
- At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
- You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
- In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
- Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.
Quotes in EN5
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Homes across EN5 and their bedrooms
Across EN5, including New Barnet, High Barnet and Hadley, bedrooms come in every size. Fitted wardrobes are made for the room you have, using the full height where it helps. Hanging, shelves and drawers inside are arranged around what you store.
The biggest shares of homes in EN5 were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. About 27% of homes in the EN5 postcode district date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. About 45% of households in the EN5 postcode district live in detached or semi-detached houses, based on Census 2021. A house like that normally has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.
Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so we look at both during the design visit.
Barnet: For families living near Grasvenor Avenue Infant School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. For a flat near New Barnet station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Looking after your furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
- Think about where you’ll keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
- For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
- Let us know which walls face outside
With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then. Don’t let shoes or bags sit in the track.
Don’t dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut because damp air ends up in the wardrobes. Opening a window now and then helps.
Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Under a sloping ceiling, standard wardrobes leave most of the space unused. A bespoke wardrobe can be shaped to follow the slope, with hanging where it’s tall and drawers or shelves where it is low.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
Pricing fitted wardrobes in EN5
To work out the quote, we look at:
- The overall size of the piece
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Parking and unloading on your street
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Let us know about parking at the design visit.
Before the design visit
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.
Do you need fitted wardrobes?
A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage without crowding the floor. Inside, the layout can change as needs change.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- Wardrobes that are full to bursting
- Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
FAQs: fitted wardrobes in EN5
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.
Which boards do you build with?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, and the quote says which is used where.
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns awkward space into storage.
Where is the furniture made?
It is made at our workshop. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.
Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?
Uneven floors are normal in older homes. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet.
Do you do the electrics?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Do you work outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: every London borough and the City of London.
