Under-stairs storage in Finchley, Barnet

Thinking about under-stairs storage in Finchley? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote.

  • Storage that doesn’t match the hallway
  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes

Questions from Finchley

Can you fit under-stairs storage to the uneven walls of an older house in Finchley?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Finchley?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do you work in Finchley?

Yes. We design and make under-stairs storage for homes in Finchley, and the process is the same everywhere we go.

Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?

Yes. It’s common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. We note them during the design visit and plan the drawers and doors around them. We do not move meters, so the storage works around their current position.

Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?

Yes. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand. You can match it to the walls, the banisters or the skirting, so it sits quietly in the hall.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How we make under-stairs storage for Finchley

Not every staircase is in a house. A maisonette, a split-level flat or a staircase down to a lower floor can all leave space underneath. We measure the space and the route in, so the sections built in our workshop fit through the front door and along the hall. Wherever your home is in Finchley, the process is the same. If your home has wanting a quiet corner for paperwork and a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are typically solid brick, which can be cold, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. A large share of the homes around Finchley date from then. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

What prompts under-stairs storage in Finchley

Many people get in touch after digging through clutter to reach a meter or the fuse board. Good storage can keep these in clear reach behind their own door, and the rest of the space can still work hard.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • No room for a small desk or a place to work
  • Storage that doesn’t match the hallway
  • Space under the stairs that’s hard to use
  • A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter

Near listed buildings like The Manor House, about 0.5 miles south-west of the centre of Finchley, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Where other trades come in

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
  • Plastering and decorating around the new storage
  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
  2. At the design visit we measure the space and plan the storage around the meters, so readers and engineers can still reach them.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Starting with a design visit

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

What it is made from

Pull-out drawers

The back of an under-stairs space is hard to reach, so drawers that slide out are often the answer. You see everything at once, without reaching into the dark. They can hold shoes, the vacuum or cleaning things.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It’s a good choice for drawer boxes and carcasses that carry weight. The layered edge can be left on show or painted.

Making use of tricky spaces in Finchley

In the area around Finchley, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 17%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Finchley. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Around Finchley, about 47% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Barnet as a whole, about 20%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of under-stairs cupboards.

If you live in a period home close to St Paul's Finchley, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. If you live in a flat close to New Southgate station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.
