Pull-out drawers
Some pull-outs are tall, with a rail for coats or room for a vacuum. Shorter drawers lower down suit shoes and bags. We plan the mix at the design visit.
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall, closing the gap a standard unit would leave. They help the storage look as though it was always there. The plinth at the bottom does the same job at the floor.
Under-stairs storage in Merton Park: what you get
In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. That calls for clean lines, well-fitted doors and a finish that suits the rest of the room. Fronts can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. The result should look like part of the house, not an afterthought. If you’re living with a fuse board that’s hard to get to and space under the stairs that’s hard to use, under-stairs cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of homes around Merton Park are that old. Under-stairs cupboards are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the under-stairs cupboard we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Caring for painted furniture
Getting the most from under-stairs storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Look for meters, a fuse board or pipes before we visit
- Plan decorating around the fitting
- Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
Heavy items are best kept in the lower drawers. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. Shelves are made for the things you told us about at the measuring visit, so it is worth keeping to that plan.
Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space is not in use. Overfilled drawers put strain on the runners, so it pays to sort them now and then. Wipe up any spills, particularly near the floor, before they dry.

That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

Fitting day, step by step
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need, like coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
- At the design visit, the space is measured and any meters are noted, because they must stay accessible.
- We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
- The storage is made in our workshop and painted in your colour.
- The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
Starting with a design visit
Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

Flats, leases and landlords
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls during the design visit.
Your questions about under-stairs storage in Merton Park
Does a conservation area in or near Merton Park affect fitted furniture?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Is Merton Park in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes. Merton Park is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Merton and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.
Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?
Often a mix works best. Drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space, and a cupboard at the tall end handles taller things. We’ll suggest a layout when we visit.
What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. It depends on the size of the space, how many drawers and doors you want, and the finish. For a quote, message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
