Merton Park Fitted Home Offices

In Merton Park, we design fitted home offices around the room you actually have. Your home office is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF because it is stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It is used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where a smooth, even finish matters.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.

How we make fitted home offices for Merton Park

A spare room often makes the best home office, especially if it still needs to work as a guest room. The office can be planned to leave space for a bed or a sofa, or doors that close over the desk at the end of the day. It is worth talking through at the design visit in Merton Park. People typically come to us about cables trailing across the desk and floor and a desk buried under papers; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of the homes around Merton Park date from then. That leaves room for shelving above a desk right up to the picture rail or cornice. Lath-and-plaster walls need suitable fixings, particularly for loaded shelves.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and tell us how you work and where you’d like the office, including the equipment you use.
  2. We visit to measure the room and discuss the desk, shelving and storage.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. The desk, shelving and cupboards are built in our workshop.
  5. The office is fitted in your home and checked, ready for work, with cable routes left clear.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Ask for a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

What fitted home offices cannot fix

Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Connecting printers and screens
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator

Not sure whether your space suits fitted home offices? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Cable routes
  • Filing drawers
  • Built-in desks
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

The problems fitted home offices solve

Clutter on the desk is a common reason to get in touch. Built-in drawers, cupboards and shelving give everything a place. The desk stays clear for work.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Files and folders piling up
  • Flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight
  • Glare from a window on the screen
  • A corner too odd for a standard desk

If you live in a flat close to South Merton station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Working from home in Merton Park

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Merton Park were built before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Merton Park include Church of St Mary (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west, and Dorset Hall (Grade II), under half a mile north. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 47% of homes in the area around Merton Park were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. In older houses, an alcove or a small back bedroom often makes a good place for a built-in desk.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. The wider area includes historic houses like Southside House, about 1.4 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

What it costs

Several things affect the price:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The internal fittings

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Getting in touch

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Merton Park

Can you fit fitted home offices to the uneven walls of an older house in Merton Park?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Merton Park?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Do you work in Merton Park?

Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, and that includes Merton Park.

Do you work outside London?

No. We cover London only: every London borough and the City of London.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
