Under-stairs storage in Wimbledon
How we make under-stairs storage for Wimbledon
In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. That calls for clean lines, well-fitted doors and a finish that suits the rest of the room. We can make plain or panelled fronts, painted to sit with the walls or to stand out. In Wimbledon or anywhere else, the aim is storage that looks considered, not added on. We make under-stairs cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are no room for a small desk or a place to work and a fuse board that’s hard to get to.
Homes in an area like Wimbledon can come from many different periods, so the awkward spaces vary too: a bay, the space under the stairs, a hallway recess or the eaves of a converted loft. The furniture is made for the space as it is. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

How it is made
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting can be done on site after fitting. Small marks are simple to touch in later, which helps in a well-used hall.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF can be cut and shaped cleanly, which suits the angled panels under a staircase. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which stays stable and takes paint well. It’s the main material for the parts you see.
FAQs: under-stairs storage in Wimbledon
My home in Wimbledon is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Does a conservation area in or near Wimbledon affect fitted furniture?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How is the price worked out?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?
Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. Standard units show the gaps, and filler strips can only hide so much. Our storage is scribed to the walls and stairs and set level, so the lines look right. Standard units come with shelves and rails where the maker put them, rather than where you need them. With fitted furniture, the inside is planned around what you keep.
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Wimbledon homes and under-stairs storage
In the streets around Wimbledon, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 44%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. The centre of Wimbledon is within about a quarter of a mile of the Wimbledon Hill Road Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Merton is inside it. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Wimbledon, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.
If you live in a period home close to St. Mark's Church, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. The wider area includes historic houses like Southside House, about 1.1 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. Living in a block of flats near Wimbledon station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
Wimbledon is within the London Borough of Merton. Design visits and fitting in Wimbledon can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. In Merton, Wimbledon is one of the places we cover.
Every address in SW19, SW20, SW17 and SW18 is covered for under-stairs storage, from the main roads to the quieter streets. If your home is on a street such as High Street Mews, High Street and Church Road, or close by, we can visit to measure up for under-stairs storage. Wimbledon is near the A218 and B235; on busy main roads, unloading under-stairs cupboards takes a little planning. If you are just outside Wimbledon, we also cover Crooked Billet (1 mile west), Wimbledon Park (1 mile north), Wimbledon Chase (1 mile south), Copse Hill (1 mile south-west) and Merton Park (1 mile south-east). Across the rest of Merton, our area takes in Colliers Wood (2 miles east), Morden (2 miles south), Eastfields (3 miles south-east), Merton Abbey (2 miles south-east), Mitcham (3 miles south-east) and Hackbridge (3 miles south-east). Being one of the larger places in Merton, Wimbledon is covered for under-stairs storage and everything else we make.

Green spaces nearby include Henman Hill and Merton Park Green Walks.
Fitting day, step by step
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including anything on the walls near the work. We cover floors and doorways first. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.
- It starts when you get in touch with a few details about the space, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
- We come to measure, note any meters or fuse boards and talk through the design.
- A quote in writing follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out, for you to read through.
- We make every part in our workshop, shaped to the angle of your stairs. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls. Any meters stay easy to reach.
How to prepare
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Getting a quote
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.
Advice
What affects the price in Wimbledon
Several things affect the price:
- The internal fittings
- The number of doors and drawers
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.
Getting in touch
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
