Under-stairs storage in Eastfields

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf storage comes in the colours the maker offers. Bespoke storage can be painted in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, so it can match the hall, the stairs or the woodwork. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Why us?

  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • We work across all London boroughs
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

About our under-stairs storage in Eastfields

In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. Here the doors, drawer fronts and finish matter as much as the storage behind them. We can make plain or panelled fronts, painted to sit with the walls or to stand out. The result should look like part of the house, not an afterthought. Most enquiries start with a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out and open space under the stairs that collects clutter, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Eastfields, the landing is worth a look as well as the hall. If a boiler or cylinder sits there, it keeps its clearances and access.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Questions we are often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Mitcham Eastfields station?

Yes, homes across Merton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Eastfields?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you match the storage to my hallway?

Yes. You choose the colour, and we agree it before the work starts. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Flats, leases and landlords

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. It starts with some details from you about the space.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan how you will use the space.
  3. We send a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
  6. New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.

Before we arrive

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
  • Plastering and decorating around the new storage
  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs
