Fitted wardrobes in Merton Park: what you get

Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. Then we fit them in your home, levelling them on a plinth or adjustable feet. Typical reasons to get in touch are bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Around Merton Park, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. Fitted storage can sit in the alcoves or span the wall, chimney breast and all. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the fitted wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the wardrobes are fitted. Small marks are simple to touch up.

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawers can be hidden behind doors or shown as part of the front. Internal drawers keep a clean run of doors.

What affects the price in Merton Park

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

Getting in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • How you want to use the space
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. We then make the wardrobes in our workshop, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use.

Preparing the room

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Getting a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

When you need someone else

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work

Caring for painted furniture

Getting the most from fitted wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting

Hang clothes evenly along each rail rather than packing one end. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support, so the rail stays straight.

Let doors close gently rather than slamming, and slide doors without forcing them. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Merton Park

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Merton Park?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

My house in Merton Park is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing, while sliding doors save space but only open part of the wardrobe at a time. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. We don’t plaster or decorate. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you use our contact form.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else.

Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, both good spaces for fitted storage.
