Under-stairs storage for your home in Wimbledon Park
About our under-stairs storage in Wimbledon Park
Under-stairs storage isn’t only for houses. A maisonette, a split-level flat or a staircase down to a lower floor can all leave space underneath. The parts we make in our workshop are sized to get through the doors and hallways on the way in. The same careful process applies to any home in Wimbledon Park. People normally come to us about a low corner too deep to reach into and nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Wherever your home in Wimbledon Park sits in London’s mix of housing, there is usually a space that could work harder. That space can take fitted storage, laid out for what you need to keep. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so we check before choosing fixings.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Fitted storage in Wimbledon Park
Homes built before 1919 make up about 42% of the housing in the streets around Wimbledon Park, with about 19% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. 14 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Wimbledon Park. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Merton is inside it. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Wimbledon Park. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.
For a flat near Earlsfield station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For an older house near Church of St Luke, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. For families living near Albemarle Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.
Wimbledon Park is within the London Borough of Merton, about 1 mile south of Wimbledon. Design visits and fitting in Wimbledon Park can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. In Merton, Wimbledon Park is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 20 places on our list.
In SW19 and SW18, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Dora Road, Church Road and Arthur Road, along with the roads around them, for under-stairs storage and any of our other fitted furniture. Wimbledon Park is near the A218; on busy main roads, unloading under-stairs cupboards takes a little planning. Neighbouring places we cover for under-stairs storage include Wimbledon (1 mile south), Crooked Billet (1 mile south-west), Copse Hill (2 miles south-west), Merton Park (2 miles south) and Wimbledon Chase (2 miles south). We also make under-stairs storage in nearby places such as Colliers Wood (2 miles south-east), Morden (3 miles south), Eastfields (3 miles south-east), Merton Abbey (2 miles south-east), Bushey Mead (2 miles south) and Mitcham (3 miles south-east).

What we do not do
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
- Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
- Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Questions we’re often asked
I live in a flat in Wimbledon Park. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.
How fitting works for under-stairs storage
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. We plan the details of the day during the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You contact us about the space under your stairs.
- At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
- We send a written quote for the storage.
- In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
- We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly.
Preparing the room
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Arranging a design visit
We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

What else we make in Wimbledon Park
What it is made from
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. We use it for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted to match.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting on site lets the storage be finished alongside the woodwork around it. It is easy to touch up later. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.
How we price under-stairs storage
Several things affect the price:
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- How big the furniture is
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Spray painting or hand painting
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
Getting in touch
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Your postcode and the borough
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.
