Under-Stairs Storage in New Malden

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make under-stairs storage for homes in New Malden, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Storage that does not match the hallway
  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Is New Malden in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?

Yes, we work across Kingston upon Thames, New Malden included, and across the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in New Malden?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Drawers usually involve more work than plain shelving, and the finish makes a difference too. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.

How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The storage is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the hallway as clear as we can while we work.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?

Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there’s enough height at one end. A built-in desk with shelves above and drawers below can work well. New sockets or lights are for your electrician, and we leave a route for the cables.

About our under-stairs storage in New Malden

Some under-stairs spaces are open enough for a small desk. We can build a desk with shelves above and a drawer or two below. Any new socket or light there is for your electrician, and we leave room and a route for the cable. We’ll look at whether it suits your stairs when we visit in New Malden. People usually come to us about coats and shoes piling up in the hall and struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Around New Malden, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

From workshop to your room

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. It starts with a few details from you about the space.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan how you’ll use the space.
  3. We send a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and run through each drawer and door with you.
  6. Treat the fresh paintwork gently while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

What we don’t do

Not everything around under-stairs storage is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances
  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Hand-painted finish

Fitted storage in New Malden

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around New Malden were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 40%) and before 1919 (about 24%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of New Malden include New Malden Library (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east, and The Royal Oak Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If you live on or close to a main road in New Malden, let us know at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

Southside House, about 1.6 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. If you live in a period home close to New Malden Baptist Church, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. If you live near Beverley Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

New Malden is part of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, about 2 miles north-west of Kingston upon Thames. What affects the cost of under-stairs storage

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How square the room is
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The number of doors and drawers

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

What to send when you get in touch

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you contact us, it helps to send:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Examples of the look you are after

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Could you do it yourself?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
