Under-stairs storage for your home in Hook

Under-stairs storage in Hook: what you get

Each under-stairs cupboard is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes that carry weight, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and fronts. The finish is sprayed or hand-painted, and then the storage is fitted in your home in Hook. If your home has a staircase with untidy space beneath it and a dark, wasted space under the stairs, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a family house, the hall and stairs normally carry the most clutter. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Hook, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

What it’s made from

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall. They help the storage look as though it was always there. The plinth at the bottom does the same job at the floor.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. We use it for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.

What under-stairs storage can’t fix

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Altering or cutting into the stairs
  • Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Pull-out drawers

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you contact us.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit.

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Under-stairs cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch with some details and, if you like, a sketch. It is useful to say whether the meters are under there.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you’ll use the space.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Take your time to look through it.
  4. We make the drawers, doors and carcasses in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Arranging a design visit

Advice

Is it time for under-stairs storage?

With more people working from home, some want a desk tucked under the stairs. Where the space is open to a room, a built-in desk with shelves can fit there neatly. It will not replace a full home office, but it suits paperwork and a laptop.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • No room for a small desk or a place to work
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs
  • A fuse board that is hard to get to
  • A low corner too deep to reach into

Fitznells Manor, about 2.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

Under-stairs storage in Hook: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hook were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hook include Orchard Court (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 32% of households in the neighbourhood around Hook live in terraced houses, according to Census 2021. Under-stairs cupboards in terraces often house the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board, so storage is designed to keep them reachable.

Living in a block of flats near Chessington North station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For a family home near St Paul's CofE Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Hook

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hook?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do you cover homes near Chessington North station?

Yes, homes across Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

What materials do you use for under-stairs storage?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, so it suits the doors and fronts, while birch plywood gives strength to the drawers and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
