Under-stairs storage designed for your room
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it during the design visit.
Under-stairs storage in Hampton Wick
Each under-stairs cupboard is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and fronts. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in Hampton Wick and fitted. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a sloping corner nobody can reach and needing a compact spot for a laptop.
Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and so do the tricky corners, from bays and stairs to halls and eaves. The furniture is made for the space as it is. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Hampton Wick
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Hampton Wick were built before 1919 (about 37%) and since 2000 (about 26%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 15 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Hampton Wick. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Hampton Wick is covered by it. We go through parking and access at the design visit.
For an older house near All Saints Church, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. If your children go to St John the Baptist Church of England Junior School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.
Hampton Wick is about 1 mile north-east of Kingston upon Thames, part of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. From period terraces to newer flats in Hampton Wick, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Hampton Wick is one of 16 places on our list for Kingston upon Thames.

The problems under-stairs storage solve
Many people struggle with the shallow, sloping end under the bottom steps. You cannot stand up in it, and you can’t reach the back without kneeling. Pull-out drawers solve that by bringing the back of the space to you.
A few of the things people ask us to solve include:
- A low corner too deep to reach into
- Storage that doesn’t match the hallway
- No room for a small desk or a place to work
- Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
If you live near Canbury Gardens, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
Before you choose who makes it
- How they handle walls that are not straight
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Can you see real work of theirs?
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standard storage is built for a level floor and a square space, but the space under a staircase rarely offers either. Boxed units usually leave tricky gaps under the slope and dead space behind. Storage made for the space follows the angle of the stairs and uses its full depth. It is a bigger investment than a flat-pack unit, and the return is in the space it uses. Standard units come with shelves and rails where the maker put them, which may not suit what you need to store. With fitted furniture, the inside is planned around what you keep.
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What happens on fitting day
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. We plan the details of the day at the measuring visit. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
- We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
- We send a quote in writing for the storage.
- The drawers, doors and carcasses are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
- We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
How to get a quote
A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Questions we’re often asked
Does a conservation area in or near Hampton Wick affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is Hampton Wick in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes, we work across Kingston upon Thames, Hampton Wick included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?
Often a mix works best. Deep pull-out drawers suit the shallow end under the bottom steps, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We’ll suggest a layout when we visit.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
How much does under-stairs storage cost?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The size of the space, the number of drawers and doors, and the finish all shape the price. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?
It depends on the height and how open the space is. We look at it at the design visit and tell you honestly whether it will work. If it does, a compact desk with shelving can suit paperwork and a laptop.
What affects the price in Hampton Wick
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
What to send when you contact us
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Examples of the look you are after
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.
