How we make fitted wardrobes for KT1

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. It turns an tricky corner into storage. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about several odd pieces where one run of storage would do and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way.

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

What affects the price in KT1

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, use our contact form.

Homes across KT1 and their bedrooms

Across KT1, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have, with the inside laid out around what you keep.

About 31% of the homes in the KT1 postcode district went up before 1919, and about 18% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 43% of households in KT1 live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Hampton Wick: Hampton Court Palace, about 1.4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For an older house near All Saints Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

When is bespoke worth it?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

How we price fitted wardrobes

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How square the room is
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

What to send when you get in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, use our contact form.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in KT1

Sometimes it’s a change in how a room is used. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role without crowding the floor. Inside, the layout can change as needs change.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed

Where other trades come in

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Structural changes to the room

Questions from KT1

Do you make good the walls afterwards?

No. Plastering and decorating are not part of our work. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

Everything is made at our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. It is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Is it possible to have storage over the bed?

Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. It is planned so there is room around the bed and the room doesn’t feel enclosed.

Do you work outside London?

No. Our work is in London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls so the doors close neatly.
