Under-stairs storage in Pentonville

When the hall is tight, the space under the stairs is often the only place left for coats, shoes and bags. We can make a coat section with a rail or hooks, shoe drawers and a small shelf for keys and post. With a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, it sits quietly in the hall. It is a small change that makes a busy hallway feel ordered. People normally come to us about open space under the stairs that collects clutter and struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Without a loft, a flat’s storage has to come from the hall, the recesses and the rooms. With most households around Pentonville in purpose-built flats, that’s often the starting point. Shallow cupboards and seats with storage add a lot without taking much floor.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Pentonville

Does a conservation area in or near Pentonville affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is Pentonville in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?

Yes. Pentonville is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Islington and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Could the space under my stairs take a desk?

In many homes it’s possible, if the space is open to a room and tall enough at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Why bespoke in Pentonville?

Standard drawer units are made in fixed sizes that rarely match the depth under the stairs. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. Each one is sized for what it will hold, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Flats tend to have walls interrupted by doors, radiators and sockets, so off-the-shelf widths rarely fill the gaps. Fitted furniture is made for the spaces that are left.

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

From workshop to your room

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured along with the room itself: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none.

  1. You let us know about the space under the stairs.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and run through each drawer and door with you.
  6. New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.

Before fitting day

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

How to get a quote

To get a quote, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Advice

What it’s made from

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall, closing the gap a standard unit would leave. They help the storage look as though it was always there. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting gives the fronts a very even surface. It is applied in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once it is fitted.

How we price under-stairs storage

There is no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Before the design visit

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Under-stairs storage in Pentonville: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 35% of the housing in the area around Pentonville, with about 23% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Pentonville, Historic England’s list includes Sadler House (Grade II*), under half a mile south, and Wells House (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home in Pentonville is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

For families living near St John Evangelist RC Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. Dr Johnson's House, about 1.4 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. If you live in a period home close to Church of Saint Peter, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.
