About fitted wardrobes in N1P

Doors can be hinged or sliding. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. We weigh them up with you at the design visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. We then make the wardrobes in our workshop.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

What goes into your quote

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Landmarks near Hoxton

Around Hoxton, we cover homes near Stag's Head pub, Islington Green School and Shoreditch Park Primary School, among other places. Other local landmarks include Church of St Anne with St Columba (under half a mile east), Shoreditch Park (under half a mile north-west), Hackney University Technical College (close by, under half a mile south-east) and Bishopsgate Institute Special Collections and Archives (1.1 miles south). There’s a railway station in Hoxton itself: Hoxton station. Other landmarks nearby include St Leonard's Hospital (less than half a mile east) and Montfichet's Tower (1.6 miles south-west). Green spaces nearby include Barnsbury Wood.

Bedroom storage across N1P

Across N1P, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. The design follows the room, not a catalogue.

Homes built before 1919 make up about 32% of the housing in N1P, with about 28% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. About 28% of homes in N1P were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs. Purpose-built flats are home to about 69% of households in N1P, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, N1P included. Wherever you are, the job starts with a design visit.

Hoxton: Close to Shoreditch Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. For an older house near Church of St Anne with St Columba, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

When you need someone else

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
  • Structural changes to the room
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes

Before and after fitting day

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall beforehand

Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Hinges can typically be adjusted to line the doors up again.

Don’t overload a single rail or shelf. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so mention anything unusually heavy when we plan.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

What affects the price in N1P

There is no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Getting in touch

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form. The written quote follows the visit.

Questions from N1P

Is it possible to have storage over the bed?

Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that is often wasted and can include bedside shelves. We measure the bed and the room at the measuring visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How do I get a quote?

Simply use our contact form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few photos, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, followed by a written quote.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

It depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The wardrobes are built in our workshop first.
