About fitted wardrobes in EC1V

Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in the colour you choose. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. Typical reasons to get in touch are dusty space on top of the wardrobe and not enough hanging space; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Tell us about parking as well, as a van usually needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Quotes in EC1V

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What you get with us

  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Saturday work by prior arrangement

Starting with a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Fitted wardrobes across EC1V: local notes

Across EC1V, from Hoxton, Farringdon and Smithfield outwards, we design and fit fitted wardrobes. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

The biggest shares of homes in EC1V were built since 2000 (about 31%) and before 1919 (about 28%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. A quarter or more of the homes in the EC1V postcode district (about 26%) were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, fixed to suit the wall. Around a third of the homes in EC1V (about 31%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs.

We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and EC1V is part of that. Wherever you are, the job starts with a design visit.

Farringdon: Near listed buildings like Priory Church of St John of Jerusalem, less than half a mile north of the centre of Farringdon, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Barbican Conservatory? Fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Standalone wardrobes cost less to buy and can come with you when you move. That is a real advantage if you are renting or moving soon. Fitted wardrobes stay with the room, and are planned to suit it.

What to check before you book

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

Caring for painted furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:

  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Hinges can normally be adjusted to line the doors up again, and sliding doors can be reset on their track.

Don’t overload a single rail or shelf. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so tell us during the design visit if you need to store something heavy.

What prompts fitted wardrobes

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage while leaving space to move. Inside, the layout can change as needs change.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Because the doors are sprayed before fitting, they arrive already finished. Give the paint time to cure fully.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which makes it ideal for wardrobe doors and visible panels. It is a sensible choice against a colder external wall.

Questions we are often asked

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings. The slope is measured during the design visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

The inside is planned around your clothes. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included, in the proportions you need. We plan it with you when we visit.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls so the doors close neatly.

Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?

We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. If you are in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to walls.

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes, as long as it is ventilated. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we plan airflow behind and within it to help avoid condensation and mould.

What are your fitted wardrobes made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, and the quote says which is used where.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
