Under-stairs storage for your home in West Wickham
How we price under-stairs storage
There is no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Parking and unloading on your street
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Helping us understand the room
To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:
- Your postcode and the borough
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.
Under-stairs storage in West Wickham: what you get
We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly, and MDF gives the doors and fronts a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in West Wickham and fitted. We make under-stairs cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are cleaning things with no proper home and wanting a quiet corner for paperwork.
Around West Wickham, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

What it’s made from
Doors and drawer fronts
A door for the meter or fuse board can match the rest of the fronts. It opens wide so readings and checks are easy. Around it, the other fronts can be drawers, doors or a mix.
Spray-painted finish
For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. It’s applied in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once it’s fitted.

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in West Wickham
Others are looking for a small place to work. Where the space is open to a room, a built-in desk with shelves can fit there neatly. It won’t replace a full home office, but it suits paperwork and a laptop.
We are often asked to help with:
- Needing a compact spot for a laptop
- An old cupboard door that does not suit the hall
- Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
- Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
Close to Millers Pond? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
Choosing a carpenter
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

What happens on fitting day
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.
- It starts when you get in touch with a few details about the space, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
- We come to measure, note any meters or fuse boards and go through the design.
- You receive a quote in writing for the storage we have discussed.

Advice
Caring for painted furniture
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:
- Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
- Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
- Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
- Clear the space before the design visit if you can
Wiping the fronts with a soft, damp cloth is normally all they need. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. Handles and the edges of drawers are touched most, so give them a wipe now and then.
Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. It’s best to let them dry before closing the door on them, and leave the door open for a while after a wet day if the cupboard feels damp.
Your questions about under-stairs storage in West Wickham
Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in West Wickham?
Yes. West Wickham is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Is parking a problem for fitting in West Wickham?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?
It depends on the height and how open the space is. At the design visit we’ll say whether a desk makes sense there. Where it works, it makes a neat spot for a laptop and paperwork.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
How long will the fitting take?
How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Drawers, doors and carcasses are all made in the workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
What materials do you use for under-stairs storage?
Our storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Birch plywood holds screws well, which matters for drawers that carry weight. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
