About fitted wardrobes in BR3
You can choose hinged or sliding doors. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you at the measuring visit. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a bedroom that never feels tidy and no space in front for doors to swing.
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.
- You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows.
- We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote.
- We then make the wardrobes in our workshop.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.
How our quotes work
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Ask for a quote
Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, use our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
What’s near Beckenham
Around Beckenham, we cover homes near Christ Church, Harris Academy Beckenham and Harris Primary Academy Beckenham Green. Also close by are Beckenham Place Park (0.6 miles north-east) and The George Inn (a few minutes’ walk south). Beckenham has its own railway station: Beckenham Junction station. Nearby you will also find Beckenham Beacon (less than half a mile south-west) and The Glades (1.9 miles east).
Homes across BR3 and their bedrooms
Across BR3, from Beckenham, Plaistow and Shortlands outwards, we design and fit fitted wardrobes. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whatever it is made of.
About 35% of the homes in the BR3 postcode district went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 22% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. About 35% of homes in BR3 date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.
In London, the route into a home matters as much as the room, so we look at both during the design visit.
Beckenham: Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St George, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Beckenham, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If you live near Beckenham Place Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.
The problems fitted wardrobes solve
A move is a common trigger. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom, or won’t go up the stairs at all. Built-in wardrobes are planned for the room you live in now.
A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
- Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
- Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
Flat-pack or bespoke?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
What we don’t do
Not everything around fitted wardrobes is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
- Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
Practical tips
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
- Let us know about the lift and stairs in your block
- Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
- In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support.
Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut. A little ventilation in the room helps.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
Questions we’re often asked
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, in moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions. The slope is measured during the design visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.
Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?
The space in front of the wardrobe typically decides it. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We will look at the room with you at the measuring visit.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.
Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?
Floors in older houses are often out of level. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors hang true.
