About fitted wardrobes in BR4
Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We plan for the people using it too. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are storage boxes stacked under the bed and a bedroom that never feels tidy.
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
- At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Tell us about parking as well, as a van usually needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
- You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
- The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
Quotes in BR4
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry
- More than 300 projects completed
- Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- A design visit, then a written quote
- Scribed to uneven walls
Arranging a design visit
To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across BR4
Across BR4, including Beckenham, Hayes and West Wickham, bedrooms come in every size. Fitted wardrobes are made for the room you have, using the full height where it helps. The inside layout is planned around your things.
In the BR4 postcode district, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 36%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 25%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. About 36% of homes in the BR4 postcode district date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 25% of homes in the BR4 postcode district were built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Post-war bedrooms are typically simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, fixed to suit the wall.
Homes across BR4 range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.
Hayes: For a flat near Hayes (Kent) station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For a family home near Hawes Down Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.
Flats, conversions and lettings
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.
What affects the price in BR4
Several things affect the price:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- How many doors and drawers there are
- How square the room is
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit.
Helping us understand the room
Ahead of the design visit, we will typically ask about:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Is bespoke worth it?
Large flat-pack wardrobes can be hard to build in a small bedroom. We make fitted wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home, ready to assemble in the room.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
The problems fitted wardrobes solve
Moving home often prompts it. Wardrobes from an old home rarely suit a new room. Built-in wardrobes are planned for the room you live in now.
Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
Looking after your furniture
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
- Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
- Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
- List the things that won’t hang, such as jumpers and shoes
Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe, particularly on an external wall. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.
Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut. Opening a window now and then helps.
Questions from BR4
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Which boards do you build with?
We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. Your quote sets out the materials.
Where is the furniture made?
Everything is made at our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. It is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Will you travel outside London?
No. We cover London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.
Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?
We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls so the doors close neatly.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
We plan it with you during the design visit, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
