Our fitted wardrobes across CR0

We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in a colour agreed with you. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about empty alcoves in the bedroom and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way.

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

What goes into your quote

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Near you in Croydon

Our area takes in the homes around Cambridge Tutors College, Keg & Grill pub and Rutherford School and the streets around them. You’ll also find Heathfield Academy (less than half a mile south-west), St Andrew's (close by, under half a mile west) and Park Hill Recreation Ground (a few minutes’ walk north-east). There is a railway station in Croydon itself: South Croydon station. Well-known places in the area include St George's Walk (a few minutes’ walk north) and Croydon University Hospital (1.7 miles north). For a walk, there’s Duppas Hill.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across CR0

Many older bedrooms across CR0 keep a chimney breast with an alcove on each side. Where there is not one, fitted wardrobes can run along a full wall instead. Either way, each piece is fitted to the walls and floor as they are.

The biggest shares of homes in CR0 were built before 1919 (about 27%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 25%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 25% of homes in CR0 date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. Of the 26 places we have local pages for in CR0, 8 have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.

Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Croydon: For an older house near St Andrew's, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Addington Palace, about 2.5 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

When you need someone else

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Structural changes to the room

What it is made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, so it’s a good choice for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes. You can paint the edge or leave the layers showing.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. It’s easy to touch up later, and it works well in a period bedroom.

Tips worth knowing

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • List the things that will not hang, like jumpers and shoes
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open

Painted doors feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, handle the doors with care and do not scrub the surfaces.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose and adjust any door that starts to catch.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

A move is a common trigger. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.

Fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Questions we’re often asked

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We look at it with you when we measure.

How do I get started?

It is easiest to fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Where is the furniture made?

Each piece is made in our workshop for the room it is going into, then fitted in your home. It’s built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes, as long as it’s ventilated. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Do you make good the walls afterwards?

No. We don’t plaster or decorate, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
