Under-stairs storage in Yiewsley, Hillingdon

In Yiewsley, we design under-stairs storage around the room you actually have. Your under-stairs cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • A fuse board that’s hard to get to
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work
  • Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show

Under-stairs storage for homes in Yiewsley

Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. Many designs for homes in Yiewsley combine the two. If you are living with space under the stairs that’s hard to use and no room for a small desk or a place to work, that’s what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Many post-war homes have a boiler in a hall, kitchen or landing cupboard. Any new cupboard around it keeps the clearances its manufacturer sets out. With many homes around Yiewsley built between 1945 and the early 1970s, we look for boilers, meters and fuse boards at the design visit. Work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf storage comes in the colours the maker offers. Bespoke storage can be painted in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, so it can sit with the walls, the banisters or the skirting. Skirting boards stop standalone furniture sitting flat against the wall, and that gap catches dust and wastes depth. Built-in pieces sit tight to the wall, scribed over the skirting.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Making use of awkward spaces in Yiewsley

In the area around Yiewsley, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 45%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 27%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Yiewsley include White Hart Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Hillingdon are set locally. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

If you live in a period home close to St Joseph the Worker & Dovetail Centre, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. The wider area includes historic houses like Northolt Manor, about 1.4 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

Is it time for under-stairs storage?

Some people simply want somewhere for coats and shoes. A coat and shoe section under the stairs keeps the floor clear and the door easy to open, and everyone knows where things go.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • The low end of the space going to waste
  • A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter
  • Cleaning things with no proper home
  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall

For a flat near Southall station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Post-war blocks often have shared stairwells and lifts, so the furniture comes in sections that fit them. If the building has rules on lift use or working hours, it helps to tell us at the measuring visit.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
  2. At the design visit we measure the space and plan the storage around the meters, so readers and engineers can still reach them.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Advice

Questions from Yiewsley

Is Yiewsley in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?

Yes. We cover all of Hillingdon and the rest of London, and Yiewsley is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Yiewsley?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for the angled panels that follow the stairs. The moisture-resistant grade we use is stable and paints well. Most of what you see on the finished storage is MDF.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting gives the fronts a very even surface. It’s applied in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once it’s fitted.
