Under-Stairs Storage in Southall

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on under-stairs storage in Southall starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter

About our under-stairs storage in Southall

No two staircases are quite the same. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. We scribe the storage to the stairs and the walls, so it looks as though it has always been there. That is something a standard unit can’t do, in Southall or anywhere else. If you are living with storage that doesn’t match the hallway and an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter, that’s what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A good part of the housing around Southall is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

What affects the price in Southall

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The overall size of the piece
  • The internal fittings
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What to send when you contact us

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Pull-out drawers

Tips worth knowing

Getting the most from under-stairs storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Let us know about anything bulky that needs to fit
  • Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
  • Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
  • Let us know about parking near your home

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the fronts clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The edges of drawers and the areas around handles pick up marks first.

Do not store things in front of the meter or fuse board. Readers and engineers need to reach them, and you may need to as well. A dedicated door makes this easy to keep up.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you contact us.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
  3. You receive a written quote for the storage.
  4. We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

How to get a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, use our contact form.

Storage in Southall homes: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 36% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Southall, with about 32% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Southall include Liberty Cinema (Grade II*), less than half a mile north, and Southall Manor House (Grade II*), less than half a mile south. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 32% of homes in the area around Southall date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Interwar houses normally have a straight flight of stairs with a cupboard below, often holding the meters or the fuse board, so the design keeps them reachable.

If you live in a flat close to Southall station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Osterley House, about 1.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. Close to Minet Country Park? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Questions we are often asked

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Southall?

Yes, we work across Ealing, Southall included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Southall station?

Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?

The answer depends on your stairs and what you will keep there. Drawers make the low end useful, because you pull the back of the space to you. Cupboards suit the tall end, for coats or a vacuum cleaner.

What materials do you use for under-stairs storage?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors and fronts are MDF, which is stable and paints well, and birch plywood is strong, so it suits drawer boxes and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?

Yes. It’s common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. We note them at the measuring visit and plan the drawers and doors around them. Moving a meter is not our work, so we design for where it is now.
