Under-stairs storage for homes in Ruislip
We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly, and MDF gives the doors and fronts a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in Ruislip and fitted. If you’re living with a hallway crowded with coats and shoes and a staircase with untidy space beneath it, that’s what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A good part of the housing around Ruislip is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Ruislip
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Ruislip were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Ruislip, Historic England’s list includes Lady Bankes School (Grade II), less than half a mile south, and High Grove House (Grade II), under half a mile north. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Hillingdon has its own. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Let us know about parking at the design visit.
Ickenham Hall, about 1.7 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. If you live in a flat close to West Ruislip station, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Close to Church Field Gardens? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

Other parts of Hillingdon we cover include Hayes (4 miles south), Yeading (3 miles south), Yiewsley (3 miles south), West Drayton (6 miles south-west), Yiewsley (5 miles south-west) and Cowley (5 miles south-west). Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the design visit.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

What we do not do
We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Gas pipework, which needs an engineer on the Gas Safe Register
- Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- Altering or cutting into the stairs
If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.
Boards, parts and finishes
- Spray-painted finish
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
- Hand-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Pull-out drawers
- Birch plywood
When is bespoke worth it?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
What happens on fitting day
You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You contact us about the space under your stairs.
- We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
- We send a written quote for the storage.
- In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
- We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.
Preparing the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Keep pets in another room while we work
Arranging a design visit

Related advice
Is bespoke worth it?
If you only need a hook or two and a basic shelf, an off-the-shelf option may be enough. Bespoke work earns its place when you want to use the whole space, from the tall end to the lowest corner. We are happy to talk through which suits you during the design visit. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can use the full height too.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit.

Questions from Ruislip
I live near West Ruislip station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Ruislip?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?
Yes. The storage is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you. You can match it to the walls, the banisters or the skirting, so it sits quietly in the hall.
Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
How much does under-stairs storage cost?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The mix of drawers, doors and shelves, and the finish you choose, all play a part. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.
