How we make TV and media units for Yiewsley

Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen, and larger speakers can go on open shelves either side. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors. If you’re living with games, controllers and remotes everywhere and a big screen that dominates the wall, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many homes around Yiewsley date from the post-war decades, and London’s post-war housing includes flats in low- and high-rise blocks as well as houses. In a post-war living room, the walls are typically flatter than in a Victorian one, which helps, but ceilings and floors still get measured, as nothing is assumed. Cable routes, ventilation for set-top boxes and the position of sockets all go into the design, and any new wiring is a job for your electrician.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Not every bought cabinet allows enough air for warm equipment. We plan ventilation for boxes, consoles and amplifiers. Concrete and block walls can make it hard to fix ready-made furniture securely, whereas fitted pieces are designed with fixings that suit the wall. It matters most for tall cupboards and full shelves.

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Living-room carpentry in Yiewsley: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Yiewsley were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 45%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Yiewsley include White Hart Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than a third of the homes in the area around Yiewsley (about 45%) were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Rooms from that era are often squarer, with fewer alcoves and sometimes no chimney breast, so a full wall of TV and media units is often the answer, with fixings chosen for the wall.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Joseph the Worker & Dovetail Centre, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. For families living near Brookside Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Walls in post-war homes can be concrete or blockwork, so the right fixings are part of the plan for fitting day. Floors and doorways are protected while the sections come in.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. A written quote follows for the unit.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Southall station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Yiewsley?

Yes. Yiewsley is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hillingdon and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Where should speakers go in a TV unit?

We plan open spaces for speakers and soundbars. Closing speakers behind a door muffles them.

How do I get a quote?

Simply tell us about the room on our contact form. Rough sizes and a few photos help, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.

Is it time for TV and media units?

Others are tired of furniture that doesn’t fit. Standard TV stands rarely suit an awkward wall, and that’s where a bespoke unit helps.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go
  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste

If you live near Northala Fields, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
