Common questions about alcove units

Is parking a problem for fitting in Yiewsley?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you make alcove units for a home in Yiewsley?

Yes, Yiewsley is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hillingdon and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?

Yes. Few alcoves in older houses are truly square, so we scribe each unit to follow the wall. A plinth or adjustable feet set it level on a sloping floor.

Should both alcoves have the same units?

That depends on how you use the room. Alcoves are often different widths anyway. They can share a style while doing different things.

How we make alcove units for Yiewsley

Period alcoves are rarely square. Walls bow, corners wander and floors slope, often all at once. We make each unit in our workshop to the measurements we take, then scribe it on site, so the sides meet the wall closely rather than showing a dark line. Adjustable feet or a plinth set it level. If your home has alcoves that are wasted space and room to work in an alcove, that’s what alcove units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In many houses from the 1950s and 1960s, the living room has a wide window and a plain chimney breast or none at all. Around Yiewsley, many homes come from between 1945 and the early 1970s, and alcove units can give a room like that a focus. A run of low cupboards with shelving above can sit under or beside the window.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

With bought furniture you are limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, either spray painted in the workshop or hand painted. They can match the walls, the woodwork or neither. A ready-made unit pushed back to the wall leaves a gap above the skirting, and that gap catches dust and wastes depth. Built-in pieces sit tight to the wall, scribed over the skirting.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

How fitting works for alcove units

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Post-war homes often have concrete or block walls, so fixings are chosen for the wall on fitting day. Floors and doorways are protected while the sections come in.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and the alcoves, and a rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves and discuss the design, noting the skirting, picture rail and any chimney vent.
  3. We send a written quote for the units, so you can look it over in your own time.
  4. Each unit is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
  5. The units are fitted in your home and scribed to follow the walls.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Arranging a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Built-in living-room furniture in Yiewsley

In the streets around Yiewsley, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 45%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 27%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Yiewsley, Historic England’s list includes White Hart Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 45% of homes in the neighbourhood around Yiewsley were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Post-war rooms tend to be simple shapes, often without a chimney breast, so a full wall of alcove units is often the answer, fixed to suit the wall, which may be concrete or block.

If you live in a flat close to Southall station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Northolt Manor, about 1.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. If you live near Northala Fields, alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

How we price alcove units

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • How square the room is
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Getting in touch

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Caring for painted furniture

These points come up often when people plan alcove units. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Decide whether the units stop at the picture rail or run to the ceiling
  • Bring the sizes of anything that has to fit in the cupboards
  • Clear the alcoves before the design visit if you can
  • Check whether there is a vent in the chimney breast

Make a note of the paint colour used. Small marks on a hand-painted finish are easy to touch up, and it is useful to keep a little of the paint.

If a damp patch appears near a unit, look into it early. The cause is a job for the right trade, not something paint will hide.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
