Walk-in wardrobes in South Street: what you get
Many London homes have a small room that is tricky as a bedroom. Fitted out from wall to wall, it can take the clothes that crowd the bedroom, and the bedroom itself feels calmer. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. People usually come to us about a dressing table with drawers and a mirror and a bedroom without crowded wardrobes, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around South Street, the third bedroom is often small, sitting over the stairs. Small rooms like that suit walk-in wardrobes, whether the room is a guest room, a dressing room or a study. Nothing is assumed: the room is measured wall by wall.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Flats, leases and landlords
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

How we price walk-in wardrobes
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- The width and height of the space
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Helping us understand the room
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- What the furniture needs to hold
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit

Why people ask for walk-in wardrobes in South Street
Couples sharing a wardrobe often want more space each. We can design separate areas for hanging, shelves and drawers, so both have room.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- A bedroom without crowded wardrobes
- A side each for a couple
- Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe
- Shelves for shoes and bags
If you live in a period home close to Church of St Mary the Virgin, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in South Street
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in South Street?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.
Do walk-in wardrobes need ventilation?
Yes, it helps avoid condensation and mould. The design allows air to circulate and walls should be dry before we fit.
Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?
There’s no single right answer. Doors, open rails and shelves can all be combined, and we will talk it through at the design visit.
What happens on fitting day
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Arranging a design visit
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 29% of homes in the streets around South Street were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025).
